This
is a cover from Steve Hacket's Defector album. Given the
cheesy Siel keyboard and drum machine, it could sound a lot
worse. But compared to the original, well...
Adam and I recorded
this around 1989 while I was on leave. He did some of
the guitar parts. I think everything was tracked directly, no amps or mics. We were going to get a friend who could sing like
Geoff Tate to come over and do the vocals but that never panned
out.
This
was a lesson in how hard it can be to record metal. It was
pretty much the worst sounding thing I had for this 4 track
remix project. The
bass and drums were bounced to muddy oblivion so they had
to be pulled out using EQ. I put this up
because of how much better it sounds (?) after being tweaked to no
end in the ol' DAW. And before you ask -- yes, some of the
guitars were recorded with a mic directly over an amplifier
being flushed down the toilet. Had to match the drums...
Another metallic song recorded at "Haze Grey". That and
some musique
concrète
using a Digitech delay to sample various albums along
with my voice and a conversation taking place in the room.
Something to do with underage drinking and DUI. Squids...
No
guitar
mics here either if I remember correctly. I'm amazed at
some of the tones I got. Should have
taken notes...
Sure
why not. Hey, Zappa did it. So did that band with the
Elvis impersonator (you know the one). For some
reason they both took it in a reggae direction. Well this
is more like spaced out industrial techno with a Gary Richrath
solo at the end.
From
a mix perspective, it was a real mess. The original
version from The Non-Commercial had some really bad Aqualung vocals on it, now gone mostly.... Ok, I spent way
too much time doinkin' around with this. But I offer it up
with tongue firmly in cheek..
